FETTY WAP RECEIVES SIX-YEAR PRISON SENTENCE FOR INVOLVEMENT IN MAJOR DRUG RING

Rapper Fetty Wap, known for his hit "Trap Queen," has been sentenced to six years in prison in connection with a sizable drug ring operation based in Long Island.

The artist, whose real name is Willie Junior Maxwell II, has been in custody since August last year after his bail was revoked. This was due to allegations that he brandished a firearm and threatened someone's life during a FaceTime call.

Fetty Wap pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine. Prosecutors argued for a stiffer sentence, asserting that Fetty had leveraged his fame to glorify the drug trade. His breakout song "Trap Queen" in 2015 earned him substantial income from his music.

In addressing the court, U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said, “Young people who admire the defendant and are considering selling drugs need to be sent a message that selling drugs is not a glamorous lifestyle and, if they participate in that trade, they will receive lengthy prison sentences.”

The sentencing took place on Wednesday (May 24) at the federal court in Central Islip, N.Y., presided over by Judge Joanna Seybert.

Fetty Wap was arrested on federal drug charges at New York's Citi Field in October 2021, just as he was about to perform at the city's Rolling Loud Festival. He was accused of running a large drug ring out of Long Island, purportedly aiding in the trafficking of over 100 kilograms of opioids, crack, and cocaine from the West Coast for distribution in Long Island.

The FBI recovered considerable amounts of cocaine, heroin, fentanyl pills, various firearms, ammunition, and $1.5 million in cash following his arrest.

Despite facing imprisonment, the 31-year-old rapper expressed gratitude to his fans and remained optimistic in a statement last October.

Meanwhile, despite his legal troubles, Fetty Wap had a relatively successful year in music in 2022. His viral hit "Sweet Yamz" gained popularity on TikTok and was declared "Song of the Year" by fellow artist Snoop Dogg.
