RECAP: 21 SAVAGE + JID KICK OFF THE "AMERICAN DREAM" TOUR

On May 1st, 2024, Vancouver's Rogers Arena came alive with the kick-off of 21 Savage's highly anticipated "American Dream Tour." In his first solo performance on Canadian soil since a joining Drake on their tour in Toronto last October, the Atlanta rapper literally brought the fire, and energy that was more than a performance—it was a statement.

21 Lil Harold, a long time friend of 21 Savage, was the first to take the stage at Rogers Arena. Lil Harold isn't just a rising star in the rap game; he's a storyteller whose music is steeped in the gritty realities of Atlanta's streets. His performance was a raw display of talent, with tracks that relate to his life, reflecting his journey from the hardships of his early life to his current burgeoning career. His connection with the crowd was noticeable, setting a high bar for the night with anthems that are both introspective and robust.

Next up was J.I.D, known for his articulate rap style and rapid-fire delivery, seized the spotlight, demonstrating why he’s a revered figure in hip-hop. His set was a rich tapestry of sounds, seamlessly transitioning from the introspective depths of "Never" to the pulsating beats of "Off Deez." More than his mastery of rapid rhythms, J.I.D's life story is compelling, rooted in the authenticity of East Atlanta and enriched by his educational journey at Hampton University.

Here, his raw talent was sculpted into the sharp lyrical prowess that now defines who is as a person. His performance not only showcased his technical rap skills but also offered a glimpse into his soul, reflecting his life's dual themes of struggle and success.

The alliance with J. Cole's Dreamville Records marks a significant chapter in J.I.D’s career, providing him a platform and a creative family that champions collaboration and artistic growth. This relationship is evident in his music, which intertwines his personal experiences with broader societal narratives, making every verse resonate with profound authenticity. On stage, every lyric he delivered showed his persistence and the transformative impact of finding the right artistic companions, as he captivated the audience with a performance that was both intimate and explosive.

Around 9:15 the DJ cut the music before the arena transitioned to a dark, smokey, and moody setting. 21 Savage appeared behind a mechanical LED screen which rised to the rafters, a figure both imposing and charismatic. Opening with the menacing and classic beats of "No Heart," each song was a showcase through his discography's high points, including the introspective "a lot" and the haunting "Bank Account." His presence was more than that of a performer; he was a storyteller, his lyrics weaving through themes of triumph, pain, and resilience.

This tour follows a monumental year, including a collaboration tour with Drake, and the success of his album 'American Dream,' which solidified his status at the pinnacle of hip-hop.

21 Savage's personal journey—from a tumultuous childhood in the United Kingdom to his immigration issues in the U.S.—adds a layer of depth to his music that resonates profoundly with his audience. Last night, his performance was not just about the music; it was about overcoming, celebrating, and dreaming, all themes that are quintessentially American, yet universally relatable.

A noticeable gap in the lineup, Nardo Wick's absence was felt. Due to unforeseen "visa" issues preventing his entry into Canada, the crowd missed what undoubtedly would have been a fiery set from one of hip-hop's promising talents. His hit "Who Want Smoke??" still made its echo through 21 Savage's tribute, a nod to his friends missed but acknowledged presence.

As the night wound down with 21 Savage's hit song "Redrum" it was clear that this was more than a hip hop concert; it was an experiential journey through what it means to chase the American dream through the lens of music. The tour is set to continue across North America, with each city no doubt awaiting the electrifying performance that Vancouver experienced. What will the next city hold? Can the energy and narrative evolve with each stop, capturing the local spirit while retaining the essence of the American dream? Only time will tell, and anticipation is undoubtedly high.
