RECAP: DOWN WITH WEBSTER RETURNS TO VANCOUVER AFTER A DECADE

The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, BC was turned into a party July 24th, 2024, as Down With Webster took the stage for the first of two sold-out shows, marking their return to the road after almost a decade. The Canadian rap-rock fusion band, fresh off the first leg of their short tour, did not disappoint their devoted fans.

Kicking off their set with a storm of enthusiasm, the band members bounced across the stage, high-fiving fans and launching piles of red solo cups into the ecstatic crowd. Some concert goers in the front row had mentioned they lined up as early as 2pm to secure their spots. This immediate connection set the tone for an amazing night, where the audience was treated to a seamless blend of nostalgia and timeless hits.

The concert began with "One in a Million," immediately immersing the crowd in a wave of euphoria. This opening track set the stage for "Time to Win," a high-energy performance that had the audience jumping in unison. The momentum continued with "Go Time," as the band members showcased their unparalleled stage presence.

Down With Webster's origins trace back to 1998, when Patrick Gillett and Tyler Armes formed the group during a Grade 8 music class. The band, named after the titular character from the ’80s sitcom Webster, quickly gained a following with their genre-bending sound that merged reggae, funk, jazz, and hip-hop, particularly after Martin “Bucky” Seja joined the lineup.

As the night progressed, fan favorites like "Rich Girl$," "Big Wheels," and "She's Dope" had the crowd singing along, each track a reminder of the band's unique ability to blend infectious beats with clever lyricism. The lively performance of "Professional" highlighted their musical versatility, followed by a heartfelt rendition of "Well Now," a Camm Hunter cover that resonated deeply with the audience.

Their journey hasn't always been smooth. Despite early rejections from major labels, Down With Webster's relentless drive caught the attention of industry giants like Gene Simmons and Timbaland. Ultimately, they signed with Universal/Motown, and their debut EP, Time to Win, Vol. I, catapulted them into the spotlight with hits like "Your Man" and "Whoa Is Me."

In a surprising twist, the band played "Invaders Must Die" by The Prodigy, infusing their set with an unexpected but exhilarating cover. The night continued with "Don't Even Care" and "Gravity," tracks that highlighted their lyrical prowess and ability to connect with the crowd on a deeper level.

The energy was kept high as they performed "So Cold" and the mashup of "Jessica / Grind," leading into a mesmerizing drum solo that left the audience in awe. "Light The Night" and "Star Maps" followed, each song building the anticipation for what was to come.

"Royalty" was a powerful anthem that had the entire venue vibrating with its infectious beat. The crowd erupted as the familiar opening notes of "Party for Your Life" played, followed by the haunting "Chills," both tracks from their 2014 album that still hold a special place in fans' hearts.

As the concert neared its end, the band delivered an unforgettable performance of "Your Man," a song that perfectly encapsulated their signature sound. The climax of the night came with "Whoa Is Me," leaving the audience in a state of exhilaration and yearning for more.

Down With Webster’s reunion tour, announced on April 1, 2024, to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Time to Win Vol. I, has not only reignited the band’s career but also rekindled the spirit of their fanbase. Their performance at the Commodore Ballroom was showcase to their enduring appeal and undeniable talent.

As the final notes faded and the crowd roared for an encore, one question lingered: What’s next for Down With Webster? Their return has proven they still have plenty of fuel left in the tank, and fans eagerly await what the future holds.

This epic night at the Commodore will surely be remembered as a highlight of their career and a beacon for future shows. The next performance promises even more surprises and unforgettable moments!
