RECAP: THE MARLEY BROTHERS KICK OFF "LEGACY" TOUR AT DEER LAKE PARK

On September 8th, 2024, Deer Lake Park in Burnaby, BC, became a hub of positive energy as fans gathered for the Marley Brothers’ long-awaited return to the stage for their Legacy Tour. The diverse crowd, ranging from families with kids to grandparents, formed a vibrant mosaic of reggae lovers. It was clear that the music of the Marley legacy spans over multi-generations. Fans, some arriving hours before the gates opened, hoped to secure the best spots, and as the show began, there wasn’t a single soul sitting still. Everyone danced, swayed, and—true to tradition—enjoyed their share of "Jamaican herbs."

Before the brothers even took the stage, the energy was already buzzing. Their reggae hype man emerged, microphone in hand, asking the crowd, “Are you ready for the Marley Brothers?!” The response was deafening—an eruption of excitement as everyone screamed in anticipation. The band then took their positions, with each member stepping to their respective instruments. The three backup singers, full of energy, danced their way in a line up to the microphones on the left side of the stage. And then, in a perfectly choreographed moment, the five brothers—Ziggy, Stephen, Julian, Ky-Mani, and Damian—walked out one by one from the right side of the stage, greeted by thunderous applause as their names were announced.

This performance came not long after Stephen and Damian Marley’s earlier visit to Vancouver, where they played at the iconic Queen Elizabeth Theatre on February 27th as part of their "Traffic Jam" tour. While that tour focused on the dynamic duo’s solo projects and collaborations, the "Legacy Tour" reunited all five brothers for a nostalgic and electrifying celebration of their father’s enduring influence.

This was the first stop of the Marley Brothers' "Legacy Tour," a 22-date journey across North America. Following the Burnaby concert, the brothers will head to Ridgefield, WA, Auburn, WA, and then continue their trek south, stopping in major cities like Concord, CA, Phoenix, AZ, and Austin, TX.

The park, nestled under the late summer sky, was the perfect setting for a night filled with songs that have become anthems of peace, love, and resistance. The energy reached its peak when the brothers launched into their father’s classics. Kicking off with “Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Roadblock),” the crowd’s voices became one, echoing Bob Marley’s spirit throughout the park. The seamless blend of the brothers’ individual styles created something truly special, especially when Ziggy and Damian shared the stage for the rare performance of “Shalom Salam.”

The setlist was nothing short of legendary. From "I Shot the Sheriff" to "Three Little Birds," each song evoked memories of Bob Marley’s global influence, with a sense of unity among the crowd as they sang along. Songs like "War/No More Trouble" felt even more relevant today, striking a powerful chord as everyone danced in solidarity.

As the concert reached its climax, "Exodus" and "Kaya" ignited waves of euphoria. The band's encore was the perfect close to a night of unforgettable vibes. "Could You Be Loved" filled the air, and with "One Love," the evening ended as a powerful reminder of the Marley legacy.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight before the tour, Julian Marley summed up the essence of the tour: “No better time than now.” Stephen Marley added, “Us singing together and singing our father’s songs is an overwhelming feeling. Five is one and one is five.” That sense of family and connection was in full display all night, the audience riding a wave of love, joy, and pure reggae soul.

The "Legacy Tour" doesn’t just revisit Bob Marley’s hits—it’s a celebration of the family’s generational talents. Collectively, the Marley brothers have earned 28 Grammy Awards, and they brought that collective power to the Deer Lake stage. The harmonies, the infectious rhythms, the powerful lyrics—everything came together, offering more than just live music. It was an experience, one that left fans asking: how can they possibly top this?
