The electric vibes of Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC, hummed with anticipation on the night of September 29, 2023, awaiting the musical legend, Sting, and his son Joe Sumner. The night was set to be a time portal, flitting between the classics and more contemporary melodies.
Sting's "My Songs" Tour has been a global journey. Starting at La Seine Musicale in Paris back in 2019, it painted stories of musical magic everywhere it went. Two special pre-tour shows kicked off this musical journey in Texas in May 2019. And now, here in Vancouver, the echoes of Texas seemed to linger in the air, reminding attendees of the journey they were part of.
The opening chords of "Message in a Bottle" immediately pulled at heartstrings, bringing waves of nostalgia. The symbiosis between Sting and his ensemble was evident. With Dominic Miller and Rufus Miller on the guitars, the rhythm set by Josh Freese and Zach Jones on drums was immaculately complemented. Kevon Webster’s fingers danced on the keyboards, while Shane Sager's harmonica added a soulful touch. And when Gene Noble and Melissa Musique’s voices joined in as backing vocalists, it felt as if the entire universe conspired to create this perfect night.
Songs like "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" and "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" rekindled memories, each melody painting a different hue of life's canvas. The infusion of "Lucid Dreams" by Juice WRLD during "Shape of My Heart" was an unexpected yet beautiful merger of times and genres.
The climax was arguably "King of Pain" and "Every Breath You Take," where Joe Sumner joined, showcasing a touching father-son duet, bridging generational sounds.
The encore, a powerful rendition of "Roxanne," echoed long after the final note. It was in "Fragile," however, that the soul of the evening was encapsulated. A song that's timeless in its beauty and sentiment.
As the night wrapped, an aura of contemplation hung in the air. There was a sense of collective realization. Not only had the audience journeyed through Sting’s illustrious career but they had also traveled through epochs of their own lives, evoked by each song.
